Mont Mégantic

Peak of the Appalachian Mountain Range, in southern Québec; height 1,105 m/3,625 ft. Mont Mégantic lies in the Eastern Townships region, 62 km/38 mi east of Sherbrooke.

Mont Mégantic is the site of an astronomical observatory. This area to the southeast of the peak, near the Maine border, is sometimes referred to as the Megantic Hills. Some 10 km/6 mi east of the mountain lies Lake Mégantic, which is 16 km/10 mi in length and has at its northern end the resort town of Lac-Mégantic; population (1990) 5,800. The River Chaudière flows north from the lake.
