Mont-Saint-Hilaire

City in La-Vallée-du-Richelieu census division, southern Québec, 32 km/20 mi east-northeast of Montréal; population (1991) 12,300. Mont-Saint-Hilaire stands on the east bank of the River Richelieu, opposite Beloeil.

An agricultural community also noted for a number of artists who have lived here, Mont-Saint-Hilaire was a stronghold of the Patriotes during Papineau's Rebellion against English rule in 1837. After this uprising, many Scots settled here. Mount St-Hilaire (411 m/1,348 ft) is the highest of the Monteregian Hills.

Ice storm Axcan Pharma is located in Mont-Saint-Hilaire, right in the center of what became known as the "dark triangle", the area which was most affected by the ice storm that struck the southern part of Quebec in January 1998.
Founded in 1983, its head office is located in Mont-Saint-Hilaire (Quebec), and in Laval (Quebec).
