Montacute House

Elizabethan house in Somerset, England, 6 km/4 mi west of Yeovil. It was begun in 1588 by Thomas Phelips, and completed about 1601 by his son, Edward Phelips, Speaker of the House of Commons and master of the rolls under James I. The property was presented to the National Trust through the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in 1931. It contains a collection of period furniture, pictures and tapestries.

Features

Montacute House has an H-shaped ground plan and includes contemporary plasterwork, chimney pieces, and other Renaissance features (curvilinear and finialled gables, an open balustraded parapet, and fluted angle columns).

The interior has fine 17th- and 18th-century furniture and Elizabethan and Jacobean paintings from the National Portrait Gallery in the Long Gallery and adjoining rooms.
