Montagu, Elizabeth (1720–1800)

English writer. In 1742 she married Edward Montagu, grandson of the 1st Earl of Sandwich. She was one of the best-known and most popular of the bluestocking coterie, and entertained largely at Sandleford and at Montagu House, London. Among her writings was an ‘Essay on the Writings and Genius of Shakespeare’ 1769, a spirited reply to Voltaire. She was a voluminous correspondent and her Letters were published 1809–13.
