Montagu, George (1751–1815)

English naturalist. He published an Ornithological Dictionary of British Birds (1802) and Testacea Britannica (1893) on British shells. His collection of birds and other animals was purchased by the British Museum. Montagu's harrier, a British bird of prey, is named after him.

He was born in Lackham, Wiltshire, and served as a soldier in the war with the American colonies. He was one of the earliest members of the Linnean Society, for which he wrote papers on the birds and shells of southern England
