Montauban

Industrial town and administrative centre of the département of Tarn-et-Garonne in the Midi-Pyrénées region of southwest France, 50 km/31 mi north of Toulouse on the River Tarn; population (1999) 51,900. The classical painter Jean Auguste Ingres and the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle were both natives of the town and many of their works are housed here. Textiles and porcelain are manufactured, and there is a trade in agricultural produce.

Founded by the count of Toulouse in 1144, Montauban was a Huguenot centre and was frequently besieged. It successfully resisted Louis XIII's army under de Luynes in 1621, but surrendered in 1629 after the fall of La Rochelle.
