Montclair

City in San Bernardino County, southwestern California; population (1990) 28,400. Montclair lies 51 km/32 mi east of downtown Los Angeles and immediately south-southeast of Claremont.

Montclair was incorporated in 1956, and is now a residential suburb with a lively retailing centre and some light industry.

Township in Essex County, northeastern New Jersey, 8 km/5 mi northwest of Newark; population (1990) 37,700.

Settled in 1666, Montclair was part of Newark until 1812 and was then merged with Bloomfield until 1868, when it became a separate town. Today, it is a popular hillside commuter residential area, with a busy suburban business centre. The Upper Montclair district is the most affluent part of the town.
