Monte Rio

Community in Sonoma County, northwestern California, 90 km/56 mi north-northwest of San Francisco; population (1990) 1,100. It is a resort and lumbering community.

Monte Rio is home to Bohemian Grove, a retreat that covers some 10 sq mi/4 sq mi of the surrounding redwood forests. This facility belongs to the Bohemian Club of San Francisco, which holds an encampment there every July. The club was founded in the 1870s, and once had the celebrated radical and eccentric Jack London as a member. Nowadays, however, its (exclusively male) members tend to be rich and influential establishment figures.
