Monterey

Town and fishing port in Monterey County, west-central California, USA; population (2000) 29,700. It is situated on the north of the Monterey Peninsula and the south of Monterey bay, 137 km/85 mi south-southeast of San Francisco. Formerly a leading fishing and whaling port, Monterey now bases its economy on tourism. Cannery Row houses the popular Monterey Bay Aquarium (1984); other attractions include Fisherman's Wharf (1846). Monterey Peninsula College (1947) and the Monterey Institute of International Studies (1955) are in the city, which has long been a retreat for artists and writers, and is also the site of the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Founded as a mission and presidio in 1770, it was an important port and the capital of Alta California from the 1780s–1840s; Americans took control of the town in 1846. In 1849 the constitutional convention leading to California statehood met at Colton Hall. Monterey was the setting for John Steinbeck's novels Cannery Row (1945) and Tortilla Flat (1935), dealing with migrant fruit workers.

Higher up, above the peninsula of Monterey, stands the important town from which it takes its name; but, seated on the borders of a perfect desert, it was not connected with the interior by a network of telegraphic wires, and electricity alone could spread these important news fast enough.
Go down by San Jose and Salinas an' come out on the coast at Monterey.
