Monterey Park

City in Los Angeles County, southwestern California; population (1990) 60,700. Monterey Park is situated 10 km/6 mi east of downtown Los Angeles, and immediately northeast of East Los Angeles.

Primarily a residential suburb, Monterey Park also contains some light industries, manufacturing electronic devices, air conditioners, and printed materials. The city has recently attracted large numbers of Chinese immigrants, to the extent where it now has an Asian majority and many Chinese-owned businesses. A large Hispanic minority is also resident here. Monterey Park is the site of East Los Angeles College (founded 1945)
