Monterrey

Industrial city in northeastern Mexico, capital of Nuevo Léon state; population (2005) 3,664,300. Founded in 1597, it is a major centre of industry, including a large part of the country's iron and steel manufacture, as well as the processing of copper, lead, silver, and zinc. Other industries include brewing and the manufacture of paper and glass.

The cathedral was founded in 1600 and the city is a leading centre of higher education: institutions include the University of Monterrey (1969), the Institute of Technology and Higher Education of Monterrey (1943), and the Autonomous University of Nuevo Letaten (1933).
