Monticello

City in Wright County, east-central Minnesota, on the Mississippi River, 56 km/35 mi northeast of Minneapolis; population (1990) 4,900.

An agricultural market centre, Monticello stands on a site originally owned by a Hungarian nobleman whose lands claims were persistently ignored and eventually effaced by determined squatters. A nuclear power station came on stream here in 1971.

Monticello

Country house and estate of US president Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826). Monticello is situated immediately southeast of Charlottesville, Virginia. This important historical site attracts many visitors every year.

The estate stands on Carters Mountain, overlooking plains to the east and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. In 1757, it was inherited by Jefferson, who named it Monticello (Italian, ‘little mountain’). He began construction of his own design for a mansion in the classical revival style in 1769, which was finally completed in 1809.
