Montmagny

City in the county of the same name, in southern Québec; population (1991) 11,900. Montmagny is situated on the St Lawrence River 53 km/33 mi east-northeast of Québec City.

Montmagny was founded in 1678 and is a long-established industrial centre, making machinery, appliances, textiles, and a range of other goods. Grosse Île, just to the northwest, was an immigration quarantine station from the 1830s to the 1930s, and is now a national historic site. The Île aux Grues is a resort and wildlife sanctuary in the northeast.
