Montrose

Seaport, holiday resort, and former royal burgh in Angus unitary authority, Scotland, 63 km/39 mi southwest of Aberdeen; population (2001) 11,800. The local economy is dependent on fruit- and vegetable-canning, the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and linen textiles, and timber-related occupations. The town is also the venue of a major livestock market.

Montrose stands at the mouth of the River South Esk where it forms the Montrose Basin, a tidal pool covering about 3 sq km/1 sq mi. Montrose now incorporates the village of Ferryden on the right bank of the South Esk, which has developed into a large industrial estate servicing North Sea oil production.

Montrose

City and seat of Montrose County, western Colorado, on the Uncompahgre River, 89 km/55 mi southeast of Grand Junction; population (2000)12,300.

Montrose started in the 1880s as a lumbering and mining community. It is now a market and processing centre for an irrigated agricultural region. The Ute Indian Museum is situated 6 km/4 mi south, and the city also serves as a tourist base for the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, 8 km/5 mi north, and for the Curecanti National Recreation Area and Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests, which lie some 24 km/15 mi to the east.

An affluent suburb built in the 1910s, Montrose is now Houston's most bohemian district, with ongoing restoration of its original housing stock, a profusion of small shops, and a substantial community of artists and gays.
