The local economy is dependent on fruit- and vegetable-canning, the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and linen textiles, and timber-related occupations. The town is also the venue of a major livestock market. |

The Ute Indian Museum is situated 6 km/4 mi south, and the city also serves as a tourist base for the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, 8 km/5 mi north, and for the Curecanti National Recreation Area and Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests, which lie some 24 km/15 mi to the east. |
