Monza

Town in Lombardy, northern Italy, 16 km/10 mi northeast of Milan; population (1990) 123,200. It has a motor-racing circuit that has traditionally been used for the Italian Grand Prix. Textiles, hats, and carpets are manufactured, and there are dyeing and engineering industries. Once the capital of the Lombards, it still has the Iron Crown of Lombardy, kept in the 13th-century cathedral. Umberto I was assassinated here in 1900.

In the Middle Ages Monza was an important commercial centre.
