Moonie

Popular name for a follower of the Unification Church, a religious sect founded by Sun Myung Moon.

Moonie

Town in southeastern Queensland, 305 km/190 mi west of Brisbane; population (1981) under 200. It is the site of Australia's first commercial oil strike, in 1961. The oilfield was developed in 1964, and oil is piped to Brisbane.

The town lies at the junction of the Moonie and Newell highways in a sheep-grazing area. A second, smaller oilfield is located at Alton, 96 km/60 mi to the southwest.
