Moore, Douglas

Moore, Douglas (Stuart) (1893–1969)

US composer. He studied at Yale University and with Horatio Parker, Bloch, d'Indy, Tournemire, and Nadia Boulanger. He served in the US Navy in World War I, was an organist and lecturer at Cleveland 1921–25, and taught at Columbia University in New York 1926–62.

Stage

The operas The Devil and Daniel Webster (1939), The Ballad of Baby Doe (1956), and Carrie Nation (1966); operetta The Headless Horseman (1936); chamber opera White Wings (1935).

Vocal

motet Dedication for six voices, Simon Legree for male chorus, Perhaps to dream for female chorus.

Orchestral

A Symphony of Autumn, Overture on an American Tune, Pageant of P T Barnum (1924), Moby Dick (after Herman Melville), In Memoriam, symphony in A for orchestra (1945).

Chamber

string quartet; sonata and Down East suite for violin and piano; wind quintet, clarinet quintet.
