Moore, Mike

    0.03 sec.

Moore, Mike (1949– )

New Zealand Labour centre-left politician, prime minister in 1990. He was in power for only 60 days – the second shortest time in office (behind F H Dillon Bell) of the 20th century – being replaced by Jim Bolger, after the National Party won the October 1990 general election. Moore also led the Labour Party to defeat in the November 1993 general election and was then replaced as party leader by Helen Clark.

He worked as a social worker and in a meat-processing plant, before being elected to the New Zealand parliament in 1972, at the age of 22, representing the Labour Party. In the 1980s he served in the Labour governments of David Lange and Geoffrey Palmer and, after the unpopular Palmer lost a confidence vote in September 1990, took over as prime minister.
