Moore, Patrick (Alfred Caldwell) (1923– )

English broadcaster, writer, and popularizer of astronomy. He began presenting the BBC television series The Sky at Night in 1968.

Moore was born in Pinner, Middlesex, now Greater London. He was educated privately. Moore served with the Royal Air Force during World War II, and for seven years after the war he assisted at a training school for pilots. He was director of the Armagh Planetarium, Northern Ireland 1965–68, and became vice-president of the British Astronomical Association in 1970.

He was awarded the OBE in 1968, and has received numerous professional honours. He has also composed an opera. His many books include The Sky at Night (1968–72), Moon Flight Atlas (1969), Atlas of the Universe (1970), The Amateur Astronomer (1970), Space (1970), Mars: The Red World (1971), Challenge of the Stars (1972), Guide to the Moon (1972), Colour Star Atlas (1973), Legends of the Stars (1973), Man the Astronomer (1973), Guide to the Planets (1976), Guide to the Stars (1977), and Can You Speak Venusian? (1977).
