Moosonee

Township in Cochrane District, northeastern Ontario; population (2006) 1,900. Moosonee lies 520 km/325 mi north of Sudbury, directly opposite Moose Factory on the west bank of the Moose River near its mouth on James Bay.

Moosonee is Ontario's only saltwater port, and the northern terminus of the Ontario Northland Railway, which arrived here in 1932. Reached by the ONR's ‘Polar Bear Express’, from the junction at Cochrane (250 km/155 mi south), it is a jumping-off point for tourists and for hunting and fishing parties, especially those bound for Hannah Bay, at the river's mouth.
