Morehead City

Town in Carteret County, eastern North Carolina; population (1990) 6,000. Morehead City lies on a peninsula between Bogue Sound and the estuarial Newport River, opposite Beaufort.

Founded in 1857, Morehead City is a long-established beach resort and fishing port. In 1935–37, a major port facility and railway terminus were constructed here, making the town North Carolina's second deepwater harbour (after Wilmington.
