Moreton Bay

Bay on the east coast of Queensland, Australia, between the mainland and the islands of Moreton and Stradbroke; 64 km/40 mi by 27 km/18 mi. The River Brisbane flows into Moreton Bay and the city of Brisbane is situated 29 km/18 mi from its mouth.

The first European to visit Moreton Bay was Captain Cook in 1770. The bay was the original site of a penal colony established by Sir Thomas Brisbane in 1824 and moved shortly afterwards in 1825 to the site of the present city of Brisbane.
