Morganton

City and seat of Burke County, in west-central North Carolina, lying on the Catawba River, 97 km/60 mi northwest of Charlotte; population (1990) 15,100.

Industries in Morganton manufacture furniture and clothing, and the city is a commercial centre for holiday resorts on the lakes that have been created nearby by damming the river. The city is home to Western Piedmont Community College (founded 1964) and to several state health institutions.
