Morgantown| City and seat of Monongalia County, in northern West Virginia; population (2000) 26,800. Morgantown lies on the Monongahela River, 90 km/56 mi south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. |
| The city was settled in 1767, becoming a road transportation centre and, from 1826 onwards, a busy river port. Bituminous coal has been shipped from here since 1833; the area is also rich in oil, natural gas, glass sand, and limestone. Morgantown is home to West Virginia University (founded 1867), and is known for its Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system, opened in 1972, which connects the different parts of the campus. |
