Moriches Bay

Inlet in Suffolk County, southeastern New York State. Moriches Bay is located on the southern shore of Long Island, between the mainland and the barrier islands of Fire Island and Westhampton Beach.

Moriches Bay extends for 19 km/12 mi, from Mastic Beach in the southwest to Westhampton Beach in the northeast, and is up to 4 km/2.5 mi wide. It is a busy centre for fishing and recreational boating. One of the larger communities situated on the bay is the village of Center Moriches; population (1990) 6,000.
