Morioka

City in Iwate prefecture, Japan, 135 km/84 mi southeast of Aomori; population (2005) 200,700. Morioka is the seat of the prefectural government, as well as being the centre of commerce and industry for the district. Industries include silk and cotton spinning, and the manufacture of dyes, toys, sake, and cast-iron utensils. Sulphur is mined at Matsuo, to the north of the city.

Morioka is the home of Iwate Medical University (1901) and Iwate Prefectural University (1998). Iwate Park and Takamatsu Park are nearby, as well as Mount Iwate, a volcanic mountain that contains the Iwateyama Shrine in its crater.

JT said it will close plants in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, and in Yonago, Tottori Prefecture, at the end of March 2010, and one in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, at the end of March 2011.
Koji Yoshida, an official for Morioka Fire Department in nearby Aomori, said the tremor was strong, but nothing fell off shelves.
Besides 2nd prize in the opera competition and 3rd prize in the operetta competition, Noah also won one of four prizes offered by Teatro alla Scala Milan, one of four offered by Stadttheater Klagenfurt and the Morioka Prize Japan.
