Morioka

City in Iwate prefecture, Japan, 135 km/84 mi southeast of Aomori; population (1998 est) 282,500. Morioka is the seat of the prefectural government, as well as being the centre of commerce and industry for the district. Industries include silk and cotton spinning, and the manufacture of dyes, toys, sake, and cast-iron utensils. Sulphur is mined at Matsuo, to the north of the city.

Morioka is the home of Iwate Medical University (1901) and Iwate Prefectural University (1998). Iwate Park and Takamatsu Park are nearby, as well as Mount Iwate, a volcanic mountain that contains the Iwateyama Shrine in its crater.
