Morpeth

Town and administrative headquarters of the county of Northumberland, England, 22 km/14 mi north of Newcastle; population (2001) 13,800. There are remains of a medieval castle, and the town has an ancient chantry and clock tower. Newminster Abbey dates from the 12th century and the parish church of St Mary from the 14th century.

The town hall was designed by John Vanbrugh in 1714. The Chantry Bagpipe Museum includes pipes from Northumberland, the Borders, Ireland, Greece, and Italy.
