Morrill, Justin Smith

Morrill, Justin Smith (1801–1898)

US representative. Born in Strafford, Vermont, the son of a blacksmith, he ran a general store in Strafford (1831–48), turned to farming, then went to the US House of Representatives (Whig, Republican, Vermont; 1855–67). A member of the Ways and Means Committee, he sponsored the Land-Grant College Act of 1862, providing public lands for agricultural colleges. In the Senate (Republican, 1867–98) he provided funds for their survival in the Second Morrill Act of 1880.
