Morris

City and seat of Grundy County, in northeastern Illinois; population (1990) 10,300. Morris lies on the Illinois River and the Illinois and Michigan Canal, 35 km/22 mi east of Ottawa, Canada.

Morris grew with the construction of the canal into a grain shipping centre and a major transportation hub. Gebhard Woods State Park lies immediately to the southwest, and William G Stratton State Park to the south. The Heidecke Lake Fish and Wildlife Area and the Goose Lake Prairie Natural Area are a few miles east. Northeast of these refuges, the Dresden nuclear power station has been in operation since 1970. Some 3 km/2 mi southwest of the city there once stood a 200 year-old cottonwood that was the state's largest tree, but it was blown down in a storm in 1992.

Morris

City and seat of Stevens County, in west-central Minnesota, on the Pomme de Terre River, 72 km/45 mi south-southeast of Fergus Falls; population (2000) 5,100. Morris is the centre of an agricultural and recreational area. A campus of the University of Minnesota is sited here.
