Morris, James (1947– )

US bass-baritone. He studied with Rosa Ponselle and made his debut at Baltimore in 1967, as Crespel. In 1972 he sang Ramfis at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York and Banquo at Glyndebourne. He sang the Dutchman at Houston (1984) and the following year Wotan at San Francisco and Gugliemo at Salzburg; he also sang in the Ring at Munich (1987), Berlin, the Metropolitan Opera House, New York (1989), and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (1989–91). He has featured on recordings of the Ring conducted by Levine and Haitink. Other roles include Méphistophélès, Claggart, and Donizetti's Henry VIII.
