Morris, Robert

Morris, Robert (1734–1806)

American political leader. A signatory of the Declaration of Independence 1776, he served in the Continental Congress 1775–78. In 1781 he was appointed superintendent of finance and dealt with the economic problems of the new nation. He served as one of Pennsylvania's first US senators 1789–95.

Born in Liverpool, England, Morris emigrated to America 1747, joining a merchant firm in Philadelphia. He became a cautious supporter of American independence. He attended the Constitutional Convention 1787.

Morris, Robert (1931– )

US sculptor and mixed media artist. Active as a painter and in improvisatory theatre, he later specialized in minimalist works, earthwork projects, and scatter pieces. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, he studied engineering and art, before moving to San Francisco (1950). He settled in New York, New York (1961).
