Morrisania

Residential neighbourhood in the south of the Bronx, New York City. The modern borough developed around the village of Morrisania, which was established on the Boston Post Road in the 18th century.

Originally an agricultural district and the seat of an estate established by Jacob Bronk in 1639, this hilly area was bought in 1670 by the Morris brothers, prosperous merchants. In 1874, Morrisania was made a ward of New York City, and became home to German immigrants, who brought with them brewing and other industries. Later residents included Irish, Italians, and Jews. Today Morrisania is largely Black and Hispanic, and is densely populated despite a long period of economic decline. Mott Haven, to the south, was once part of Morrisania, which has shrunk to a neighbourhood between Melrose and Tremont.
