Morrissey (1959- )

English rock singer and lyricist. He was a founder member of the Smiths 1982-87 and subsequently a solo artist. His lyrics reflect on everyday miseries or glumly celebrate the England of his childhood. Solo albums include Viva Hate (1987) and Your Arsenal (1992). His popularity declined in the UK in the 1990s and he moved to the USA.

The Smiths' split ended his most successful songwriting partnership with guitarist Johnny Marr, and his solo work has been musically less distinctive, though with his epigrammatic wit still intermittently evident.
