Morro Bay

City in San Luis Obispo County, southwestern California; population (1990) 9,700. The city lies on the bay of the same name (an inlet of Estero Bay off the Pacific Ocean), 19 km/12 mi west-northwest of San Luis Obispo.

Morro Bay is 5.6 km/3.5 mi long, and is guarded by Morro Rock, a 176 m/576 ft-high volcanic cone connected to the mainland by causeway. The city, a tourist destination, also has a large fishing fleet and a big Pacific Gas & Electric power station.
