Dufftown

Town in Moray unitary authority, Scotland, on Dullan Water, 25 km/16 mi southeast of Elgin; population (2001) 1,500. It was founded in 1817 by James Duff, Earl of Fife, and has become a major centre for whisky distilling, with companies such as Glenfiddich and Balvenie based here.

Dufftown was developed on a previous settlement, which can be traced back to AD 566 with the erection of Mortach Church, one of the earliest Christian sites in Scotland. The ruins of Balvenie Castle, built in the 13th century, stand above the town.
