Moscow

City and seat of Latah County, northwestern Idaho; population (1990) 18,500. Moscow lies on Paradise Creek, 35 km/22 mi north of Lewiston and 2.4 km/1.5 mi east of the border with Washington State.

The city was originally known as Hog Heaven, after the camas root that grows extensively in the region and is a favourite food of pigs. It was renamed after a suburb of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1876. The city is a market centre for the fertile Palouse region. Wheat and barley are processed here, along with almost all of the lentils and dried and seed peas grown in the USA. The University of Idaho (founded 1889), which houses the state Bureau of Mines and Geology, is located here. The university and US Forest Service jointly sponsor Moscow's Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station.
