Moses, Robert

Moses, Robert (1888–1981)

US public official and urban planner. As parks commissioner for New York State 1924–64 and New York City 1934–60, he oversaw the development of bridges, highways, and public facilities. Serving as New York secretary of state 1927–28, he was the unsuccessful Republican candidate for New York governor 1934.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut, USA, and educated at Yale and Oxford universities, Moses received his PhD from Columbia University in 1914. Known as a power broker, he held tremendous power in the USA for more than 40 years.

He was hired by the New York City municipal government and later headed a state redevelopment programme. He served as chair of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority 1946–68, chair of the New York State Power Authority 1954–63, and president of the 1964–65 New York World's Fair.
