Burslem

Town in Staffordshire, England. Since 1910 the town has been included in the city of Stoke-on-Trent. For many years Burslem was the chief English centre for the manufacture of earthenware, and is still called ‘the mother of the Potteries’. Josiah Wedgwood was born here in 1730, and a Wedgwood Memorial Institute was opened in 1869. As well as earthenware manufacture, there is some light engineering and tile-making.

The Burslem Tunstall and Hayward War Memorial Hospital were opened in 1930.
