Mott, Valentine (1785–1865)

US surgeon. Rapid, skillful, and ambidextrous, he pioneered various circulatory surgeries and procedures; his fame as a bold, innovative surgeon became international. He authored no major works, but bequeathed his substantial library and a surgical and pathological museum to the New York medical profession.

Mott was born in Glen Cove, New York. After taking his medical degree from Columbia University and studying surgery in Great Britain, he opened practice in New York City (1809) and was associated with various colleges.
