Mottisfont Abbey

Abbey in Hampshire, England, 15 km/9 mi west of Winchester. The 660 ha/1630 acre estate, which includes most of Mottisfont village, the abbey itself, and 162 ha/400 acres of woodland, was given to the National Trust in 1957. The abbey has early 13th-century origins and was an Augustinian priory until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s, when it was acquired by Lord Chancellor Sandys and converted into a Tudor mansion. Other major changes were made in the early 18th century.

The house contains ‘Gothic’ trompe l'oeil paintings by Rex Whistler in the Whistler Room.

A tributary of the River Test flows through the garden, which together with walled gardens and a collection of old-fashioned types of roses, creates a superb setting.
