Mottl, Felix (Josef) (1856–1911)

Austrian conductor and composer. He studied at a choir school and at the Conservatory in Vienna, became conductor of the Wagner Society there and in 1876 was engaged by Richard Wagner to conduct the music on the stage in the production of the Ring; he gave Tristan and Parsifal at Bayreuth in 1886. In 1881–1903 he was conductor at the ducal court of Karlsruhe, where he directed the symphonic concerts and the opera, producing many unfamiliar works including the first performance of all five acts of Les Troyens (1890). From 1903 he was conductor in Munich. He collapsed while conducting Tristan and died shortly after.
