Modica

Town in Ragusa province, southern Sicily, built on a hillside 8 km/5 mi southeast of Ragusa; population (1991) 50,500. Nearby is the Cava d'Ispica, a 13 km/8 mi gorge in a limestone plateau, with troglodytic dwellings and tombs from Greek, Byzantine, and early Christian periods.
