Moultrie, William

Moultrie, William (1730–1805)

US soldier and governor. A soldier, he directed military strategy in South Carolina during the American Revolution, defending Charleston in 1776. Becoming a brigadier general, he defeated the British at Beaufort in 1779, then was taken prisoner of war after the fall of Charleston in 1780. As South Carolina's governor (1785–87, 1792–94), he reorganized the militia, reestablished state credit, and improved the waterways. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina.
