Moundville

Town in Hale and Tuscaloosa counties, west-central Alabama; population (1990) 1,300. Moundville stands on the Black Warrior River, 24 km/15 mi south-southwest of Tuscaloosa.

Numerous square and oval platform mounds from the Mississippian period (around AD 1000) are preserved here on the 1.3 sq km/0.5 sq mi Mound State Monument site (see Moundbuilder).
