Mount Barker

Town in the southwest of Western Australia, 369 km/229 mi southeast of Perth; population (1996) 1,600. Industries include sheep and beef production, cereal crops, and wine production. Historic buildings include the Old Police Station and Gaol, built by convicts in 1868, and Werburgh's Chapel, which was built 1872–73.

The town was named in honour of Captain Collett Barker, the last military commandant of the King George Sound penal outpost at Albany. The district was explored by Dr Thomas Wilson in the 1830s. Early settlers included the Sisters of Mercy who were sent in 1845 to convert the local Aborigines. The town grew following the opening of a railway between Perth and Albany in 1889.
