Mount Carmel

City and seat of Wabash County, southeastern Illinois; population (1990) 8,300. Mount Carmel is situated on the Wabash River, opposite its junction with the White River, and 43 km/27 mi north-northwest of Evansville, Indiana.

An agricultural trade centre with various light manufactures, Mount Carmel is the site of Wabash Valley College (founded 1960). Established in 1818, it was for a long period famous for its freshwater mussel industry, which produced pearls, and shell for button manufacture.
