Mount Clemens

City and seat of Macomb County, in southeastern Michigan; population (1990) 18,400. This residential suburb lies on the Clinton River 32 km/20 mi northeast of Detroit.

Mount Clemens was settled in 1795 and laid out by Christian Clemens in 1818. Barrel-making and glassblowing were its early industries. The curative properties of sulphur springs in the neighbourhood soon attracted visitors. The city is now known principally for its pottery, but the local economy is also based on textile manufacture and on serving Selfridge Air Force Base, which lies just northeast, on Anchor Bay. Macomb County Community College (founded 1954) is located here.
