Mount Holly

Township and seat of Burlington County, in south-central New Jersey; population (1990) 10,600. It is situated on Rancocas Creek, 27 km/17 mi northeast of Camden.

Settled by Quakers in 1676, Mount Holly was occupied by British forces during the Revolution and served briefly (1779) as New Jersey's capital. It was an important centre of the abolitionist movement. Today it is a centre of commerce and manufacturing, producing clothing, textiles, footwear, and leather goods. Historic buildings here include the Friends' meeting house (1775), the courthouse (1796), the county prison (1810), and the Victorian Smithville Mansion complex.
