Whitney, Mount

Peak of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, south California, USA; height 4,418 m/14,495 ft. It is the highest peak in continental USA (excluding Alaska and Hawaii). It was named after Josiah Dwight Whitney, the first director of the California State Geological Service.
